Whisky was originally celebrated for its medicinal qualities, being prescribed for, the prolongation of life, and for the relief of colic, palsy and smallpox.

It is an important part of Scottish life and a feature of social life, a welcome to be offered to guests upon arrival.

The Scottish parliament, which introduced the first taxes on malt and Whisky at the end of the 17th century. After The Act of Union with England in 1707, distillers were driven underground.

There are many places to buy whisky including specialist whisky stores who will let you sample some of their recommendations to supermarkets, off licences (liquor stores) and not forgetting the distilleries. If you forget duty free always have a good supply of single malts and blended whiskies.
